Spontaneity. Considerations of composition, light and color. Often, the elements of a beautiful, compelling photograph align in the blink of an eye. Corbin Gurkin is not only skilled at capturing that unique moment in time, but also understanding what that moment and that photograph mean to a couple in the context of a lifetime.
“I get to photograph and be a part of one of the most memorable days in a couple’s life”, Corbin explains. The photographs I take don’t fade with another day’s front page, but instead they become heirlooms. The images will outlast even my own lifetime, and knowing that gives me a keen sense of how important it is that I put my all into each client’s wedding.
Just as she carefully considers every detail of documenting a couple’s wedding day, Corbin formed her career as a destination wedding photographer over a progression of many years. After focusing on painting and drawing at an early age, including time spent living overseas, she fell in love with the interaction and process of photography during a summer at the Maine Photographic Workshops. From there, Corbin took an apprenticeship with a wedding photography studio before moving on to study photography at New York University’s prestigious Tisch School of the Arts.
Corbin has photographed weddings in places as diverse as California’s wine country, the bustling streets of Paris, the beaches of Hawaii and the hillside villages of Tuscany. Along the way, Corbin has won accolades from couples, clients and countless publications. Her work has been regularly featured in The Knot, Brides and Martha Stewart Weddings, and she’s captured PDN’s Top Knots Wedding Photography award for the last two years running. The editors of Destination Weddings & Honeymoons have named Corbin among the top twenty destination wedding photographers in 2011.
Corbin approaches every assignment with the same sense of interaction and process that first drew her to photography.
“I get to know couples over the course of several months and get a sense of their personality and what photos might appeal to them”, she says. “I consider the spontaneous and candid moments throughout the wedding day, as well as the environment, ideal lighting, backdrop and time of day for taking the best images. The end result is a mix of natural reportage photos emphasizing the narrative of the day, the character of the wedding destination and a strong sense of the couple’s personality.”
That’s Corbin Gurkin’s style: spontaneity with an eye to forever.
